South Coast private tour

The route to Reynisfjara, also known as Black beach in Vík, goes through the countryside where sheep, horses, and dairy cows graze in fields and meadows. The scenery is amazing with mountains, glaciers, rivers, and waterfalls, on one hand, and the big blue Atlantic Ocean on the other. There are some must-see stops on the way including the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss. Reynisfjara is 190 km from Reykjavík and a one-way drive takes almost 3 hours.  The tour, starting and ending at your selected locations in the Reykjavík area, takes around 10 hours.

Reynisfjara is the east end of the South coast road trip.

Reynisfjara is a scenic black sand beach that has been ranked as one of ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. The power of the waves can be enormous, and great care must be taken not to go too close to the waterfront. Sneaker waves, i.e., disproportionately large waves, can sweep the beach without warning. Unfortunately, this has resulted in fatalities in the recent past, despite warning signs and recommendations from guides and tour operators.

Reynisfjara and surroundings offer a variety of basalt rock formations, e.g., tuff, columns and pillows. Basalt pillows and columns are formed under high pressure where the molten magma cools and hardens in the core of the volcano, whereas the softer tuff basalt is found on the outer side of the volcanos. The basalt formations result from eruptions on the ocean floor or under glaciers.

The waterfalls Skógarfoss and Seljalandsfoss are among the most visited waterfalls in Iceland. Skógarfoss is 60 meters high and 25 meters wide. It was declared a protected area of nature conservation by the Ministry for the Environment in 1987.

Landnáma, e. The Book of Settlement, a register of settlers and their families originally written in the early 1100s, states Skógarfoss to be a part of Þrasi Þórólfsson’s settlement. According to tales, Þrasi hid a trunk full of silver in a cave behind the waterfall.

A visit to Seljalandsfoss is a very special experience as it is possible to walk behind the waterfall and view the landscape and the river below through the spray.
