Ride on the frozen lake
The farm Álftagerði
This one hour long ride starts at the farm Álftagerði on the south side of Lake Mývatn. Be kind a show up at the farm 10-15 minutes before tour departure.
The lake Mývatn is among the largest lakes in Iceland covering 37 km2. The lake is shallow with average depth of 2.5 m and freezes over during the winter. This allows us to safely ride the frozen lake from February to March.
The geology. Located in the rift zone between the continental plates (Eurasia & America) Mývatn is situated in a geologically active area. The lake is surrounded with lava fields, basalt mountains, pseudocraters and other volcanic formations, offering a spectacular landscape view during your ride.
Ride for the whole family. The riding tour is suitable for both beginners and experienced riders from 6 years old. You can expect to spend 1,5 hours for the experience, the time in the saddle is about one hour.
This tour is available from February – March. Helmets are provided and gloves can be borrowed upon request. Make sure to be dressed according to the weather.
Safety first. This tour can only be offered if conditions allow it. If the ice is to thin or the load of snow on the trails prevents us from accessing the lake the ride will take place on land in the vicinity of the farm.
