The farm Álftagerði
We meet up at the farm Álftagerði on the south side of Lake Mývatn from where the tour starts. The trail goes along the coastline of the lake.
The lake Mývatn, the river Laxá and the surrounding wetlands are of international importance and therefore protected by the Nature Conservation Act and listed by the RAMSAR convention on wetlands. Mývatn is famous for it’s rich birdlife. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers. During the summer no place on earth has as many species of duck gathered in one area.
The geology. In addition to the birdlife one must mention the geology. Located in the rift zone between the continental plates (Eurasia & America) Mývatn is a geologically active area. The ride will bring you through amazing lava- fields and formations, including the rare phenomena pseudocraters.
Ride for the whole family. The riding tour is suitable for beginners and experienced riders from 6 years old. You can expect the experience to take 1,5 hour. The riding itself is about one hour.
This tour is available from April – October. Helmets and fly-nets are provided and gloves can be borrowed upon request. Make sure to be dressed according to the weather. Be kind a show up 10-15 minutes before tour departure.
Seasonal disclaimer: During spring time, from April through mid-May, regular trails may still be recovering from winter and may not permit riding on. During that time the tour will be adapted and the ride will take place on trails and less travelled roads in the vicinity of the farm.
